An Inverse Localized Meshless Technique for the Determination of Non-Linear Heat Generation Rates in Living Tissue
Year: 2006
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: An improved inverse technique for finding the rate of heat generation in living tissue, modeled by the Bio-Heat (Pennes) Equation will be developed. In previous work by the authors, the bio-heat equation was solved using a global meshless collocation method, using Radial Basis Functions (RBFs) for interpolation. A new localized meshless method has since been developed which, when adapted to this problem, will create a more robust and computationally efficient technique. Inclusion of this new technique will allow for the solution of more complex and realistic geometries, which are typical of living tissue. The localized meshless method will employ a time marching scheme, which allows the non-linear source (heat generation) terms to be lagged one time step to facilitate the solution of the non-linear bio-heat equation. The unknown heat generation terms will be found through a genetic algorithm optimization process, which provides an intelligent search of possible solutions and ensures each problem to be solved by the meshless method is well-posed and unique. Also, due to the greater computational efficiency of the proposed meshless solver, the optimization process can be carried to a higher level, leading to more accurate solutions. Several examples will be presented which demonstrate the improvements of this work over the previous technique and show practical uses of such an algorithm to aid in the experimental determination of heat generation rates in living tissue.
