Abstract: How did your family members influence your residential location and type of dwelling?Did your parents help you financially to buy a home?Did they stimulate you to go live on your own at some point in time? And did you move away of did you stay in the region where you grew up because you had your friends, family and job there?Maybe you followed your siblings to the big city, and perhaps you choose to live closer to your parents when you planned to have children. This study explores the influence of the wider family context on residential choices in the Netherlands. It is shown that one's family background, own household situation, and family members outside the household, influence the choices people make with respect to their housing type and residential location.Shared preferences, linked lives and the exchange of care and support explain how and why family influences residential behaviour.
