Liquid Crystals: Liquid Crystal Interfaces Programmed with Enzyme‐Responsive Polymers and Surfactants (Small 43/2015)

Abstract: Complex signaling cascades, ubiquitous in living systems, inspire the pursuit of advanced materials that can amplify molecular-level interactions into multi-length scale signal transduction processes. N. C. Gianneschi, N. L. Abbott, and co-workers seek to combine stimuli-responsive polymers with liquid crystals (LC), which are ideally suited to dynamically report on biological events occurring at LC interfaces. On page 5747, they envision that the integration of these materials can lead to the generation of a range of macroscopic signals, each triggered by subtle molecular cues.
