Mapping research trends in the field of knowledge management
Year: 2014
Type: article
Abstract: Purpose: This paper aims to map research trends in knowledge management (KM) by presenting a systematic and analytical study based on ISI data during 2001–2010 periods. Design/methodology/approach: Using scientometric techniques, a methodology was developed for science mapping. The method includes the following steps: - defining the domain - Identifying keywords related to the field and its subfields - Conducting searches and collecting the data from ISI - Drawing the structure of scientific productions using scientometric tools - Enriching the science maps by adding new attributes and visualization - Analyzing the results Findings: In this study, we have provided a visualization overview of the wide distribution of KM publications. The analysis of clusters of the historiographical maps (based on Local Citation Score (LCS) and Global Citation Score (GCS) indicated the most frequent thematic trends are: support information technologies like ' data mining' and also organizational, social and managerial elements of knowledge management. The resulting maps especially coword occurrence maps give an insightful representation of the research topics within KM field. Originality/value: Our methodology is original from scientometric viewpoint. This study can help to view and study the history of science in KM domain by drawing the structure of scientific productions, in order to do strategic planning and determining the research priorities in research institutes.
