Abstract: Filter bers are now available in many cross-sectional shapes, including elliptical.Assuming viscous ow through a lter, analytical expressions are developed to predict air ow around elliptical bers and the aerodynamic drag and lift on the bers.Important variables in uencing the velocity eld and the drag are the lengthto-width ratio of the elliptical cross section, the lter solidity, and the orientation of the ber's cross section to the incoming air ow.Plots of the streamlines for ow around elliptical bers show that pressure drop through the lter and particle collection are likely to increase as the length-to-width ratio and lter solidity increase and as more of the bers are aligned with the cross section's major axis perpendicular to the ow.The expressions developed indicate that drag can vary by more than 4 orders of magnitude as lter properties change.
