Abstract: Mammalian central nervous systems consist of highly diverse types of neurons, which are the functional units of neural circuits. To understand the organization, assembly, and function of neural circuits, it is necessary to develop and to improve technologies that allow efficient and robust visualization of neurons in their native environment in vivo. Here we discuss various genetic strategies for achieving specific and robust neuron labeling in mice.
