Polymer–Drug Nanoconjugates
Year: 2013
Type: reference-entry
Abstract: It is expected that the field of polymeric nanomedicine will dramatically change the landscape of oncology in several important ways. Two strategies for loading drugs into nanoparticles have been used: to encapsulate drugs within nanoparticles via noncovalent bonds and to formulate nanoparticles using polymer‐drug conjugates. This chapter will examine the pros and cons of each strategy and will introduce new polymer–drug conjugates—called nanoconjugates—to address the challenges faced by both strategies. Also discussed in this chapter are topics related to regioselective polymer–drug conjugation chemistry,in vitroformulation and characterization, and preliminaryin vivostudies that highlight the potential clinical translation of nanoconjugates.
