OH/IR stars close to the Galactic Centre. II - Their spatial and kinematic properties and the mass distribution within 5-100 PC from the galactic centre

Year: 1992
Type: article
Abstract: An analysis of a sample of OH/IR stars close to the Galactic Centre (GC) is presented. It is shown that the dispersion in radial velocity and the dispersion in galactic latitude both are correlated with the envelope expansion velocity (v(exp)). For low v(exp) the two dispersions are high and for high v(exp) they are low. It is concluded that stars with low v(exp) are older than stars with high v(exp) as did Baud et al. (1981, A&A, 95) for OH/IR stars in the galactic disk. The surface density distribution of the OH/IR stars within 30 pc from the GC (projected distance) has a peak which agrees with the position of Sgr A * within the errors. The surface density distribution agrees quite well with the distribution of stars at 2.2 μm
