Abstract: In the Middle Ages there was Swedish settlement in Esthonia, notably on the island of Vormso, on the Nucko peninsula and along part of the coast. By the early nineteenth century the descendants of the settlers, mainly peasants, were part of a distinctive feudal social order under German lords and the Russian crown. A number wanted to leave the country and some of them actually managed to do so. Jakobsson's thesis deals with those who sailed to Stockholm during the period 1811–1834; it seeks to explain their motives and to relate the personal consequences.
