Abstract: Although the current AIDS epidemic in India might (if recent predictions of its likely impact prove correct) drastically transform the situa- tion, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) have rarely in the past received the degree of attention their widespread distribution deserved. The reasons for this neglect, briefly stated, are these-the official preoccupation with "major" epidemic diseases with high mortality levels, the limited constituency addressed by (or accessible to) state medicine and public health services, and the powerful cultural, social and economic forces which have facilitated the spread of STDs while inhibiting their effective observation and control.
