Abstract: Although most readers of Wilderness and Environmental Medicine are quite well versed in the very latest of what modern science and medicine can provide today's wilderness adventurer, fewer have the interest or inclination to explore the historical roots of what today has come to be known as “wilderness medicine.” Perhaps fewer yet are interested enough in the health-related aspects of the turn of the 19th century in general, or the Lewis and Clark journey (1804–1806) in particular, to have read Eldon Chuinard's fine, scholarly work, Only One Man Died.
