Abstract: This paper reviews the significance of the independent sector of schooling in Scotland. It describes the distribution of pupils in independent schools according to region and age groups and shows that the proportion of pupils in these schools is often far larger than other commentators appear to believe.Comparisons are drawn with the independent sector in England and Wales. Finally a brief analysis of the schooling of elite groups in Scotland reveals that the former pupils of these schools are disproportionately represented.
