Abstract: Public service librarians frequently offer library instruction to academic library users.Despite good intentions, this instruction is often hampered by insufficient planning for the particular situation. The instructional design process provides a systematic method to prepare and present bibliographic instruction both effectively and efficiently by focusing on five essential elements. Those who use instructional design report favorably on the results of this systematic approach.
