Hormonal regulation and partial purification of thyroxine 5'-deiodinase in brown adipose tissue
Year: 1987
Type: dissertation
Abstract: Although the thermogenic function of Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT) in \nhibernators has been recognized for many years, it has only been recently \naccepted that BAT is also the most important thermogenic organ in nonhibernators \nsuch as the rat. It has also become clear that thermogenesis \nin BAT does not only occur in response to cold but also in response \nto eating and that this does not occur in some obese animals. This chapter \nwill desc~ibe some general aspects of BAT (lA) and review in short the \nphysiological role of brown fat in thermogenesis (lB). The cellular changes \nthat are involved in this process will be discussed (1 C) and some of the \nmost important effects of various hormones in the brown adipocyte will \nbe outlined (lD).
