Abstract: There are no official statistics for the total number of adoptions within the United States. In response, this study collected and analyzed data from a variety of sources to develop national and state adoption estimates for the years 2000 to 2009. Sources include state courts, state child welfare agencies, state bureaus of vital records, and the U.S. Department of State. Subtotals for public, intercountry, and other adoptions also are provided. Results indicate that the number of adoptions decreased from 2000 to 2009. The trends discussed in this article may have implications for future adoption policy and practice.
