The Difficulty in Diagnosing Cord Colitis

Year: 2014
Type: article
Abstract: In this issue of Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, Milano et al. report a lack of evidence for cord colitis syndrome (CCS) after umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT), instead positing acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) as the source [1]. CCS was initially described as a syndrome of noninfectious, antibiotic-responsive diarrhea after UCBT [2]. The case definition of CCS required histopathologic examination of endoscopic tissue that excluded GVHD and other etiologies of diarrhea.
