Abstract: Spain has a long tradition of organizing international exhibitions. Our analysis is based on archival research on the exhibitions of Barcelona (1888 and 1929) and Seville (1929, 1992) as well as a study of the international exhibitions of 2004 in Barcelona and 2008 in Saragossa. The legitimacy of large-scale amusement parks is based on the quality of the public spaces created and the parks’ willingness to create places of both memory and innovation. Recreation contributes to the creation of a sustainable city by the imposition of an urban nature privatizing major parts of the city. New public spaces of quality are emerging, based on biomimicry and landscape-ecological urbanism. These spaces lack legitimacy because they are perceived as artificial and expensive despite rising attendance. Regarding large-scale landscape work, this is seen as being positive but in search of a new identity and sustainability.
