Abstract: Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of South Africa is well \nknown as the model case in dealing with the past. TRC, based on the \nPromotion of National Unity and Reconciliation Act in 1995, was \nconceived as 'part of the bridge-building process designed to help lead \nthe nation away from a deeply divided past to a future founded on the \nrecognition of human rights and democracy(TRC Report Vol. 1)'. TRC \nhad tried all the efforts to uncover the truth about past gross violations \nof human rights in the belief that this was necessary for reconciliation \nand national unity. However, the road to reconciliation and healing was \nneither smooth nor short. \nI've researched the various ways of healing and reparations during and \nafter TRC in South Africa society. There are three main categoriesreparations \nin money or other financial aids, psychological approaches \nto heal the suffered relationships among people and communities, and \nbuilding or removing historical sites to make the past memorable. It is \nvery meaningful and needed to adopt reparations in different levels even \nthough the dead and the past cannot be returned. Any reparations without \njustice cannot heal the internal wound. I also emphasize that the \nperpetrators and the benefiters need to be educated and healed to live \nin a 'reconciled' new community.
