Systolic Hypertension in the Elderly Program (SHEP). Part 7: Baseline laboratory characteristics.

Year: 1991
Type: article
Abstract: P resented are results of the baseline laboratory analyses performed on the participants randomized into the Systolic Hypertension in the Elderly Program (SHEP).Included are information on chemical methodology, data on secular trends and external laboratory surveillance, and baseline measurements on the randomized SHEP participants. Methods ProceduresThe SHEP study design specified that there be one central laboratory (MetPath) for measurement of serum chemistries.Reference methods of analysis are summarized in Table 7.1; glucose, uric acid, and lipid methodologies are described in more detail in Appendix section (References 1-16; Harelco Reagent Kit, BMD, Indianapolis, Ind.; and Dow Enzymatic Colorimetric Triglycerides Kit, Ciba Corning Co., Oberlin, Ohio).Baseline blood samples were obtained at the baseline visit 2 immediately before randomization.Participants who had previously received antihypertensive medication had been off these medications for 2-8 weeks before sample collection.A defined protocol for venipuncture was followed and included collection with the participant in the seated position, minimal tourniquet time, and centrifugation of the sample 30-60 minutes after sample collection to harvest serum. The venipuncture protocol is included in Appendix section.Whenever feasible, the samples were collected in the morning after an overnight fast.Sixty-four percent of all blood samples (2,744 of 4,322) were collected when the participant was in the fasting state.Nonfasting samples were specifically identified as such.Fasting blood samples were more often collected in blacks (72-73%) than in whites (62-64%) (data not shown). In the 60-69year-old age group, the likelihood of a fasting sample increased with body mass index, whereas the reverse was true in those 80 years old or older (data not shown).Adjustment of fasting and nonfasting results for each analyte by age, sex, race, body mass index, and medication status at initial contact did not yield results very different from those presented here (adjusted data not shown).tDeceased.
