Developing Automatization With In‐Class Surveys

Year: 2000
Type: article
Abstract: To achieve fluency in speaking, there is no doubt that ESL/EFL students need a lot of repetitive practice.Fluency can be seen as one kind of automatic process, something that requires repetition. In the field of communicative language teaching, however, we tend to think of repetitive activities as being uncommunicative and inauthentic. The trick is to design activities that allow for repetitive practice while remaining communicative and authentic.Gatbonton and Segalowitz (1988) introduce the concept of creative automatization and outline criteria for designing activities that do just that. The following inclass survey activity is based on Gatbonton and Segalowitz's idea of creative automatization, and allows for repetitive practice in a communicative environment.
