Abstract: This dissertation is dedicated to my wonderful family. I would like to first and foremost thank my very supportive parents. My mother and father have endured many sacrifices in their lives to give me and my siblings the finer things in life, and for that I am extremely grateful. My parents have given me the support, guidance, and advice that I have needed throughout my graduate school years. Thank you mom and dad. In addition, I would like to thank my sister Cindy. She is not only my sister but my best friend. I thank her for her time and energy spent listening to me cry, vent, and be joyful throughout the years. Her encouragement has meant a great deal to me. I would also like to thank my older brothers, Carlos and Cesar, for their support and encouragement. I thank my extended family for their prayers and support. I would like to thank my very patient partner in life, Brady Donovan. He has played a crucial and supportive role in my graduate studies. He has been a part of my day to day routine throughout graduate school. This means he has been there through the extremely good days and horrific bad days. His support and love has definitely been a major part of my sanity throughout these years. I would also like to thank my friends. Moving to Minnesota and being away from my family and home was extremely difficult, but the support from my good friends Navneet Sharma and Alessia Locatelli has given me comfort and peace. Finally, I thank Carol Lange for her advice and guidance both in personal matters and scientific ones. I couldn’t have asked for a better advisor and mentor than Carol. Thank you all for making these past five years in graduate school survivable.
