Information management in a District Health Authority*

Year: 1986
Type: article
Abstract: Drawing on the author's MA thesis on information management in a District Health Authority,1 the current library and information services (LIS) in the Northallerton Health District are analyzed and evaluated, indicating the problems of providing a service at District level without the back‐up of a formal Regional network in Yorkshire, and developing parallel LIS for different professional groups within a Health District. The trend, reflected both in recent developments in the National Health Service (NHS) and in the literature on Health Services Information, towards integrating documentary and statistical information in a Health District is discussed and a blueprint is given indicating how all information resources may be combined into a Health Authority Library and Information System (HALIS). The importance of planning services to take account of the needs of all NHS staff is emphasized.
