Perceived Size-ratio in Stereoscopic Vision as a Function of Convergence, Binocular Disparity and Luminance

Year: 1967
Type: article
Abstract: Two pairs of light disks with different horizontal separations were projected on a screen by two projectors with polarizing filters. When the subject looked at them through an observation window with polarizing filters, two luminous disks appeared at different distances against a dark background. Apparent size-ratio between the two disks seen in this stereoscopic apparatus were measured through the method of transposition (a kind of ratio-matching). From 4 to 6 subjects served in three experiments. Their results showed that the logarithm of the matched size-ratio increased linearly as the binocular disparity decreased from +1°09′ to -1°09′. Neither the level of convergence, nor the level of luminance affected this relation, but an unbalance in luminance between the stimuli presented to the two eyes reduced the slope of this linear relation.
