Computer Assisted Assessment of Analgesia During General Anesthesia
Year: 1980
Type: article
Abstract: In order to reduce the undesireable effects of stress due to surgical stimulation analgesic drugs are often used as part of the general anesthetic technique. Because it is difficult to estimate the clinical effects of analgesics in anesthetized patients often the subjective judgment of the anesthesiologist determines the dosage used. In attempt to find a reliable index of analgesic action we have developed a computer monitoring system designed to provide continuous assessment of the state of the central nervous system by measurement of somatosensory evoked potentials and recording of EEG spectrum, as well as recording cardiovascular parameters and the output of the Cerebral Function Monitor. By being able to correlate and dissect changes in this variety of measures it is hoped that it will be possible to separately assess analgesic and anesthetic states.
