Protective Role of Acquired Pellicle on Enamel Erosion
Year: 2012
Type: article
Abstract: Materials and method: The aim of the study was to \nevaluate, by several methods, dental erosion in 0.1 and \n1.0% citric acid in vitro and to assess the protective potential \nof the experimentally formed salivary pellicle (24 h in \nvitro). Enamel slabs were embedded in epoxy resin and \npolished. Erosion was performed in citric acid for 1, 5 or \n10 min, and recorded as calcium release. \nResults: Significant microhardness loss on non-pelliclecovered \nspecimens was measured after 1min exposure to \n0.1 % citric acid. Microhardness loss was time – and concentration \n– dependent. Salivary pellicle significantly \ninhibited both microhardness loss, except for the 10 min \nimmersion in 1.0% citric acid. \nDiscussions and conclusions: The results obtained \nsupport the general conclusion that salivary pellicle effectively \nprotects enamel surface against short-term erosion \nin organic acids.
