The burial area in El Forniellu (Leces, Ribadesella, Asturias, Spain)

Year: 2015
Type: article
Abstract: This article gathers and examines the sparse documentation (mainly journalistic) which has been preserved from the 1926 excavation of the cemeterial area of El Forniellu (Ribadesella, Asturias, Spain). Based on the analysis of the limited data available, a prolonged use of the space for funeral purposes is conjectured, at least between the middle of the 2nd and the beginning of the 5th century AD. The analysis of late antiquity outfits seems to point to the existence of a socially privileged class that controls a rural area open to trading circuits, as well as to a monetary economy.
