Year: 2004
Type: article
Abstract: HE ASSESSMENT OF THE ACADEMIC VALUE of journals is common practice among higher e ducation i nstitutions a nd research agencies internationally. Such assessments are needed for decisions about professional staff and resource allocations. The evaluation of scientific journals is of particular interest to South Africa’s policy makers as research in its tertiary education institutions is funded mainly according to the number and quality of publications of members of staff. As an example of one such periodical, this article assesses the standing of the South African Journal of Science in terms of its international counterparts and of discipline-orientated South African journals. I find that the South African Journal of Science compares favourably with its international counterparts and performs better than all the other local research journals.
