Abstract: Various public opinion polls and sociological surveys have displayed a high level of intolerance towards Roma in the Czech society. However, the investigators rarely record the individual level of intolerance. The Bogardus social distance scale is a classical instrument for this purpose. In its first part, the article deals with the development, usage and tests of the Bogardus scale. The second part of the article brings information from research conducted among the students of Palacky University in Olomouc. The analysis showed that a Roma as a neighbour was refused more frequently than the order of items the Bogardus scale expects. There was a significantly higher level of social distance towards the Roma among the medical students and physical education students than among the students of the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Arts.Sociologický časopis, 2003, Vol.39, No. 1: 55-77 Úvod Zatím poslední kolo Evropské studie hodnot (European Values Study) 1 přineslo překvapivý posun v otázce postojů obyvatel České republiky k Romům.
