Abstract: Children and teenagers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have behavioral characteristics and severe social disability might make them vulnerable within society. While scientific interest in child victimology has recently developed, we focused on victimization in this population. A controlled study was conducted to determine the prevalence of victimization and poly-victimization in a sample of children and teenagers with ASD by surveying their parents through the Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire - Screener Sum Version. The impact of and association with socio-demographic and clinical factors were assessed. Among subjects with ASD, 72% had been victimized during the previous year, three quarters of whom in schools, and 23% were poly-victims. The peer victimization score was significantly higher than in the control group. Anxiety and depression symptoms were reported in 80% of cases. Three participants with ASD (8%) had a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder. The number of victimizations was correlated with deficits in social skills and the severity of post-traumatic symptoms. Children and teenagers with ASD are particularly vulnerable to victimization in schools. Awareness and cooperation of both the teaching and the medical professions as well as improvement of these children’s social skills through peer support groups are needed to prevent these phenomena and their greater consequences in these subjects.
