Electrophoresis in colloidal dispersions in the counterion-dominated screening regime

Abstract: We study the electrophoretic mobility of spherical charged colloids in a low--salt suspension as a function of the colloidal concentration. Using an effective reduced electrokinetic (zeta) potential and a reduced screening parameter, we can map numerical simulation data with full electrostatics and hydrodynamics onto experimental data. We observe two different volume fraction--dependent regimes for the electrophoretic mobility that can be explained in terms of the static properties of the ionic double layer. We show that this concentration dependence can be parameterized with an effective zeta potential and, even in the absence of added salt, with an effective screening length.
