Exploring SNOMED Using Phylogenetic Analysis Tools

Abstract: INTRODUCTION Parsimony methods strive to determine relationships between entities using a series of homology statements. In evolutionary biology, statements of homology are made based on biological phenomena in order to classify organisms based on these criteria. These items of homology are often times referred to as 'synapomorphies.' In this presentation, we demonstrate a method whereby similar methods for analysis can be applied towards structured terminologies. Specifically, we focus our approach on disease terms contained in the Systemized Nomenclature of Medicine (SNOMED). Based on our analysis, we are able to explore how specific disease terms are grouped based on certain criteria, such as morphology or topology. The resulting view presents two distinct possible uses: 1) to verify that terms referring to similar disease states are actually grouped together, and 2) the detection of erroneous disease groupings.
