Abstract: MRI • Participants were scanned on a 1.5 Tesla Siemens Vision system at NKI. • During a 6-minute resting state fMRI scan (TR = 2000ms, TE = 50ms), participants were instructed to close their eyes and remain awake. • DTI was also collected (TR=6000, TE=100ms, 8 noncollinear directions, b=1000s/mm2, NEX=7, 2.5 x 2.5 x 5 mm voxels) Image Processing Functional Connectivity • RSFC refers to the temporal correlation of brain activity between disparate regions while a person is at rest. • We used anatomically-defined seeds placed in left and right Heschl’s gyrus (HG) and planum temporale (PT) to examine RSFC • RSFC data were processed using the 1000 Functional Connectomes Scripts (Biswal et al., 2010; avaiable at http://fcon_1000.projects.nitrc.org) • We correlated measures of auditory function (MMN, auditory emotion recognition, tone matching task; see below) with the strength of RSFC between the HG (and PT) and all other brain voxels, controlling for age • Analyses were thresholded using clusters determined by Z>2.3 and a (corrected) cluster significance threshold of p = .05 DTI • DTI Scans were placed into standard space using our published methods (e.g., Hoptman et al., 2008) • Voxelwise correlations were examined in a search space limited to the HG and PT. • Significant correlations were thresholded at a FDR of 0.05 and an extent of 50 contiguous voxels • Probabilistic tractography was performed on a separate group of 22 different controls scanned on a 3T TiM Trio (30 noncollinear directions, voxel size = 2x2x2mm, b=800s/mm2) using the significance region to examine whether acoustic radiatons were included in that white matter region • The mean acoustic radiations tract was extracted MMN
