Violence, Musical Identity, and the Celebrity of the Spanglers Crew in Jamaica
Year: 2009
Type: preprint
Abstract: This chapter explores the celebrity status of the Spanglers Crew in the Mathews Lane countersociety and how the crew uses dancehall music and culture to construct musical identity and express its celebrity status. This study has four parts, which are outlined below. The study is not so much a multilayered research design but more so methodological eclecticism. This eclecticism facilitates a nested enquiry into the subaltern celebrity culture in Jamaica by pulling together media reports, popular music, dancehall events, and the entertainment rituals and views of a criminal gang.
