Abstract: Actinorhizae oI Couania fiansburiana are indetefmirare, dichotomously branching, modificrl roots that Iorm conlloid oodulc chrsters typical of those on other Rosaceae. An individuat nodule lobe possesses a meristemrtic zoie, enlarged endophytic cortical ceils, a stele, and a poorly defined periderm. The endophyte thallus is filamentous ca.0.5 pm diameter; no septa were discerned.-The eodophyte invades immediately proximal ro rhe merisrem, firsr snmularing enlargement of rhe hosr nucleus, then cell enlargement.Iflitially rhe endophyte is closely associatid wirh rhe nucleus, then thc conoly expands to fill enlnrging conical cells.Obpyrifotm vesiclles ca. 2 x I pm form on rhe tolony periphery and are presenr during the ptimary endophyte phase.Abundant amyloplasts arc presen( In ad;ornjng cclls during rhis phase.Vesicles, hyphae, and host nuclei then degcnerate ancl .lisapp€arNo orher endoptyre phases were obsen'ed.Zones of sloughiog pcridefm cejls exposcd degencraring eoduphyre ceLl5 .rndmay serve as a mechanism for endophyte propagule release.Inlroduction
