The Colonial, the Imperial, and the Creation of the ’European’ in Southern Africa

Year: 1995
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: South Africa’s history has long been characterized as the struggle be tween an imperial power, England, and indigenous people who have sought to maintain their independence or autonomy. The interests of the imperial power, according to the standard view, were mainly to control the territory of southern Africa and to control access to natural and human resources within it. Far from being a merely historical interpretation, this view was tantamount to policy from the time that Cecil John Rhodes took his seat in the Cape Parliament in 1881 (Rotberg 1988: 128) soon after the crushing defeat at Majuba of the first British attempt to annex the Transvaal.
