Preliminary determinations of the age and composition of mineral salts on rock art surfaces in the Kakadu National Park

Year: 1987
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: Rock art surfaces in Kakadu National Park were examined in order to evaluate the possible origin and development of complex mineral salts formed on the surfaces, and to determine the feasibility of using current radiocarbon methods to date the rock art paintings. Previous work on rock art conservation in Kakadu National Park has been undertaken (Edwards 1974; Hughes 1979; Hughes and Watchman 1983; Watchman 1982, 1984a, 1984b, 1984c, 1985; Gillespie 1983), and on the prehistory and art of the region (Kamminga and Allen 1973; Schrire 1982; Chaloupka 1977, 1983; Brandl 1973). In this study, Aboriginal rock art sites were visited throughout Kakadu National Park, from Cannon Hill in the north to Deaf Adder Creek in the south.
