Socio-Cultural Innovation through and by Public Libraries in Disadvantaged Neighbourhoods in Denmark: Concepts and Practices.
Year: 2013
Type: article
Abstract: The purpose of our paper is to analyse factors influencing the libraries' innovations in the area of services for minority groups in Denmark. Our understanding of innovation is based on Frank Moulaert’s local based approach to development, called 'Integrated Area Development'. We distinguish between open and closed innovations in anticipation that conceptual innovations by public libraries take place in open, collaborative, and inclusive processes. We apply Moulaert’s local based approach to an analysis of three distinct cases - each representing an example how in practice, Denmark's library community has worked to extend the traditional concept of libraries. The cases show that the library as an institution with social potential is taken seriously in practice. Therefore it will be natural to direct future research at initiatives that enhance the social potential of public libraries in multi-ethnic neighbourhoods.
