Privacy of Facebook’s Native Chat Application
Year: 2009
Type: preprint
Abstract: In this paper, we have analyzed the Facebook chat application. We implemented a Man in the Middle (MITM) attack on the same. Our analysis indicated that if users A and B are chatting, the MITM can redirect A’s messages to a third friend, C. The MITM can also edit these messages. Hence, C will think that A is chatting with him/her and A has no knowledge of the same. This was accomplished by capturing the Facebook chat packets and analyzing/editing them. The paper also contains detailed comments on this situation from the policy, privacy as well as managerial aspects of the Facebook chat application’s security.
