Amazonia on the eve of european contact: ethnohistorical, ecological, and anthropological perspectives
Year: 1993
Type: article
Abstract: The population density and level of cultural complexity achieved by protohistoric Amazonians is one of the most controversial topics in American archaeology. Comparing descriptions in early European accounts with environmental evi dence for limitations on carrying capacity and archeological evidence for settle ment and social behavior indicates that the ethnohistorical accounts are unreliable and the surviving traditional groups more accurately reflect the precolumbian situation, both on the v?rzea and on the terra firme.
