Interfacing of two worlds : enhancing cultural sensitivity and competence via online teaching
Year: 2007
Type: article
Abstract: Immigration is a world-wide phenomenon and educators are challenged to create curricula which enhance cultural competence among graduates. Web-based instruction is a unique modality through which students can interactively engage in cross-cultural discussions with students from different countries. The purpose of this article is to introduce an online curriculum which can enhance graduates' cultural competence via a dynamic, interactive pedagogical curriculum that involves students from different continents. A nine-week online cultural exchange between an American and a South African university is described. Outcomes of the online curriculum were measured by means of a systematic process for evaluating and analysing students' growth. A pilot study using quantitative analysis is undertaken on the effectiveness of the online course in enhancing cultural sensitivity and competence. A cultural competence model related to cultural sensitivity and a framework for enhancing cultural competence skills are presented.
