Das Wort Enlils

Year: 2014
Type: article
Abstract: This paper deals with Enlil's word, the chief god of Mesopotamian Pantheon, by means of which he decrees destruction but also copiousness and fertility in the land. Two excursus conclude this article. In the first one I briefly discuss the possibility and problems of understanding Enlil's word as a hypostasis of Enlil. The second one deals with Emesal as a sacral language, i. e., the language of liturgy. I suggest defining Emesal as a secondary sacred language because in Old Babylonian times it is used not only in liturgical texts but also in the Edubba'a-literature, and only thereafter it is used exclusively in liturgical texts. Itmeans that the Babylonians scribes originally did not treat it as a sacred language and we should not consider it a primary sacred language, i. e. a language explicitly created for liturgy.1
