Abstract: The American Society of Heating Refrigerating\nand Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standard\n62- 1989 "Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor air\nQuality", adopted in 1989, is widely used by HVAC\nengineers to determine ventilation rates for various\noccupancies. This standard has also been cited in\ncourt to help demonstrate compliance with state-of the-\nart indoor environmental design.\nIn August 1996, ASHRAE released for public\nreview Standard 62-1989R, the highly controversial\nproposed revisions to the Standard 62- 1989.\nOver 8,000 comments were received on the\nproposed revision. Due to the significant number of\nconcerns expressed by ASHRAE members as well as\nothers, ASHRAE withdrew the proposed new\nstandard and placed the current standard in\n"continuous maintenance."\nAs part of the continuous maintenance process\nASHRAE is transforming the current Standard 62-\n1989 from a design standard to code ready document.\nFurthermore, two code documents will be\nproduced4ne for low-rise residential buildings and\nanother for other types of occupancy.\nFinally, two new documents, a user's manual\nand an IAQ guideline, will be written concurrent with\nthe code documents. The guideline document is\nintended to provide state-of-the-art guidance to\ndesigners while good IAQ practices not appropriate\nfor codification will be incorporated into the\nguideline.\nIt is likely that many of the provision in\nStandard 62-1989R will survive in some manner in\none or more of the new documents to be produced.\nThis paper will detail some of the more\nsignificant changes that were proposed in Standard\n62-1989R and review the current state of standard\ndevelopment.
