Adapting to the contemporary learning environment : from instructional design to learning design
Year: 2014
Type: article
Abstract: The influence of technology on the learning environment has initiated a rethinking of current teaching and learning practices, which has been reflected in views on the theoretical foundations of teaching and learning. In this regard the literature indicates a shift in thinking from the more traditional learning theories to connectivism as a more adequate learning theory. This has facilitated a movement away from the idea of 'instructional design' to 'learning design' in the teaching and learning environment. The purpose of this article is to indicate the impact of technology on the learning environment of students and how this has forced educators to reflect on three key implications of their current teaching practices in order to create more effective teaching and learning, namely: creating various learning spaces, creating communities of inquiry and rethinking the appropriateness of traditional learning materials. By taking cognisance of the movement towards a new paradigm, teaching practices can be adapted and redesigned to optimise the use of technology in a new learning environment.
