Abstract: Affluent and poorer people in British cities live parallel lives that involve rarely meeting or sharing the same spaces, not just at home, but at work, or while shopping and schooling. This map shows the contrasting employment geographies of two different sets of households in Tyneside, a large urban area in northeast England that has undergone the often painful transformation from an industrial to a postindustrial economy. On this map the most common areas of employment of people from poorer areas southeast of the river (also shown) are contrasted with those locations towards which people from the least deprived residential districts northwest of the river are most likely to travel. The metro stations of the rapid transit system are also shown.Very few people from poor areas in the south of Tyneside travel to work in centres in the Featured graphic: Travelling to work: the differing employment geographies of households in neighbourhoods of low and high deprivation in North and South Tyneside
