Abstract: This article looks into Aleksei Iur'evich German’s oeuvre, more specifically the visual elaboration of his last film, Hard to Be a God (Trudno byt' bogom, 2013), from a genetic point of view. Throughout his career the director used ‘inspiration panels’ for each of his films, onto which he pinned images that inspired him. The discovery of the images from the ‘inspiration panels’ for Hard to Be a God, mostly reproductions of artworks from the fourteenth to the twentieth century, provides a new insight into his artistic process and explains the sources of inspiration for objects, textiles, frame compositions, faces, silhouettes and bodies in this film.
