Interview with Olive Storey Spencer
Year: 2025
Type: editorial
Abstract: Audio recording and transcript of Olive Spencer's 1984 interview with Lynne Bowen for the Coal Tyee History Project. Spencer shares the stories of both her mother's and father's arrival in North America, and how the family settled in Harewood. Her father worked as a miner in the Number 1 Esplanade Mine and she reflects on her memories of Samuel Robins, who was the superintendent of the Vancouver Coal Mining and Land Company. She also describes several of the homes that her family lived in, some of which were company houses; the company farm in Harewood; how she left school at a young age to help out at home; working for the Bowen family; and the store that her mother operated.
