Genetics and the Work Force of the Next Hundred Years
Year: 2000
Type: preprint
Abstract: The December 5, 1999 issue of The New York Times Magazine is a special issue devoted to describing the efforts of The New York Times to create a time capsule to be opened in the year 3000. A panel of experts from various fields provided their opinions on, among other things, the location, architecture, contents, and style of the capsule. Besides these immediate issues, some of the experts observe that other likely events of the next thousand years would complicate any long-range planning for the year 3000, including the following: (1) the tectonic plates holding the American and European continents will drift apart by as much as sixty feet; (2) the sea level will rise by about eight feet; (3) the United States will cease to exist as a country by then; and (4) the language spoken by the inhabitants of New York City will be totally different from today's English - even today's English as spoken by the inhabitants of New York City.
