The effect of age diversity on leadership style: A case study of four school superintendents
Year: 2013
Type: dissertation
Abstract: The ability for leaders to understand and guide those they lead is critical to the success of any organization. This study seeks to expand on current research on generational diversity in the workplace. The purpose of this study is to investigate the leadership styles, opinions and behaviors of a select group of superintendents to determine if generational membership affects leadership styles and behaviors. A qualitative case study examines the leadership styles of current school superintendents from each of the generations currently in the workforce: Veterans, Baby Boomers, Generation Xers, and Millenials. The researcher seeks to examine if generational membership plays a role in the behaviors and styles of school leaders. Data sources utilized in this study include interviews, surveys, review of documents and observations of participants in their workplace. This study will allow for continued understanding of the effect of age on leadership style. As the diversity gap between young and old in the workplace continues to widen, leaders must understand their own leadership style and the effect it has on those they lead.
