High-efficiency dye-sensitized solar cells based on single crystal TiO2 nanoparticle photoanodes

Type: article
Abstract: Single crystal TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by high temperature thermal treatment of TiO2 nanotube arrays, which were prepared with potentiostatic anodization of Ti foils, in a closed environment. SEM images of samples with different time of thermal treatment revealed that the single crystal TiO2 nanoparticles were regrown from TiO2 nanotube arrays along with collapsing and disappearing of nanotube structure gradually. XRD pattern and high magnification TEM images showed that the synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles were anatase single crystal. Photoanodes were fabricated by transferring the single crystal TiO2 nanoparticle films from Ti foils to FTO glasses. Through optimizing thickness of the single crystal TiO2 nanoparticle films, the highest power conversion efficiency of the DSSCs can attain to 8.66%, with the maximum monochromatic incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency of 86.70%. Meanwhile, the presented preparation method is a kind of non-hydrothermal method, so it can overcome the output limitation of the hydrothermal method and give a facile way for large scale synthesis of high quality single crystal TiO2 nanoparticles.
