Abstract: Oyster and trout farming have a much longer history, but it is salmon farming that has raised the profile of aquaculture on the West Coast. Salmon farming has had a brief but dramatic history. In 1971 the first salmon farm license was issued in B.C. Today there are more than 100 companies with 130 operating marine sites, and many more are under investigative permit or being developed.
